Having been promoted in 2016, the 2XI began the year as the highest ranked second eleven in the country, playing one division below the National League. And the season started well, with a strong performance seeing the 2s comprehensively defend 241 against the 1XI.
After an up and down preseason featuring the renowned UCT, the BUCS campaign started with a lacklustre defeat to Bristol 1s, with spinners Gus Grant, Christian Hollingworth and Sasha Barras the only notable performers. There was a marked improvement against Portsmouth 1s, with Matt Yeabsley the star, finding his line for the only time in the year to take 5-35, before steering the chase home with 36, the 2s winning by 1 wicket.
Against Cardiff Met, a disciplined bowling performance (Grant and Barras again exceptional), was let down by the batting, as the 2s crumbled chasing 133. However, after a walkover against Southampton, the 2s beat Bournemouth comprehensively, with a ton from Toby Pullan, runs at last for skipper Harris and the standard 5fer from the GG the key components of a big win.
The final game performance failed to deliver against Oxford at the Parks, despite another five wickets for Grant and a glorious ten overs from maverick leggie Theo Gwyther. The 2s capitulated in the chase and finished fourth in the league. But never has a group of people got a night out so right as Oxford 2017.
